COIN PESEWA — WHERE & WHEN (coins catalog: by names & emitents)
  1. REPUBLIC OF GHANA (1965-...): pesewa = 1/100 cedi

The name of the pesewa coin, as it may seem, have nothing to do with the Spanish peseta. In one of the local languages — akan — pesewa ("psewabo") literally means "dark blue seeds of the plant", which was used for accurate weighing; in ancient times the term meant the smallest unit of measurement of the weight of gold.
